FAQ

Who is the Queen in Order of the Sinking Star?
She is one of the playable heroes and the character the developers use as the game's narrative through-line. Guiding her through each world uncovers her past, her true identity and how she ended up trapped in the realm. Her backstory is one of the three narrative layers in the game.
Is the Queen playable?
Yes. The Steam store description names her among the heroes, and developers describe guiding her through each of the four worlds. What she actually does inside a puzzle has not been documented, so no ability list for her exists as of September 24, 2026.
How do you learn the Queen's backstory?
By guiding her through the four worlds. The developers say her past, real identity and the reason she is trapped are revealed progressively rather than through a cutscene, because the game has no passive cutscenes and delivers story through discovery.
Is the Queen's real identity known before launch?
No. The developers have confirmed that her true identity is a reveal, but they have not said who she is. Anything claiming to know her name or origin before October 8, 2026 is speculation rather than sourced information.
What are the Queen's abilities?
Not documented. The Steam store page, the official site FAQ and the Making of posts describe her narrative role and her signature sound, but none of them describes a single puzzle ability for her. Lists that assign her one are guessing.

Quick Answer

The Queen is one of the playable heroes of Order of the Sinking Star and the closest thing the game has to a single through-line. The Steam store lists her first among the heroes, and the developers say that guiding her through each world gradually reveals her past, her real identity and how she came to be trapped in this realm. Her backstory is one of the three narrative layers the game is built on. What she can actually do inside a puzzle has not been documented anywhere.

Because she is the one character the story follows across all four worlds, she is also the best entry point into the game’s story structure, and the place where a spoiler-light reader should stop. Everything below sticks to what Thekla and the store page have actually published.

What the sources confirm about the Queen

Claim Status Where it comes from
She is a playable hero Confirmed Steam store description, hero list
The store lists her first among the heroes Confirmed Steam store description

Her puzzle abilities Not documented No ability list published
Her voice actor Not announced Voice cast named only as an “all-star ensemble”
Whether she is among the characters Demo Part 2 made playable Not documented The update confirms the playable cast grew, not by whom

That last row matters more than it looks. The Demo Part 2 update on June 19, 2026 confirmed that the demo’s playable cast grew, but the official note does not name who was added. If you see a page claiming the Queen became playable in the demo, it is filling a gap the developers left open.

Why she is the through-line

Structurally, Order of the Sinking Star starts out looking like an anthology. Each of the four worlds has its own protagonist and its own cast: the six-class moving party in the North, the Trader in the East, the Explorer in the West, and the stranded sailor in the South. The narrative post is explicit that these character stories begin fully isolated from one another.

The Queen is the exception. The developers describe guiding her through each world, not through one world. That single sentence is what makes her the spine of the story rather than another regional lead. The other characters explain their own realm and then converge; the Queen is the character whose thread already runs underneath all of them.

Official source: The Narrative of OSS (Steam news, September 14, 2026)

Two details in the official framing are worth holding onto. First, the story is delivered entirely through discovery, with no passive cutscenes that interrupt play. Second, the point of merging the character stories is that no single hero holds the whole truth. The Queen’s backstory is not a bonus lore file sitting beside the main plot. It is the layer that gives the merged account its meaning.

The three narrative layers, and where she sits

Layer What it covers How you find it
Character Tales Each realm’s own cast, starting isolated and meeting once the gateways between domains open Playing each world and bridging them
Audio logs and environmental lore The origin of the Order of the Sinking Star and how the Overworld became what it is; individual puzzles also carry their own story Hidden audio logs and the puzzle environments themselves
The Queen’s backstory Her past, her true identity and why she is trapped in this realm Guiding her through every world

The official post frames the audio logs as keys to the larger mystery rather than flavour text, which means the second layer is load-bearing. That is unusual, and it changes how a completion-minded player should treat a log they stumble across. It is not a collectible. It is a puzzle piece.

[!note] What “three layers” does not mean The three layers are not three separate modes or three save files. They are three ways the same story reaches you: the characters you meet, the environment you read, and the backstory of the hero you carry between worlds.

Her place in the cast

The Steam store description names her first in its list of heroes, ahead of a thief, a warrior, a wizard and a talking boat. That ordering is the closest thing to a statement of importance the marketing material makes. The store text is a list of characters, though, not a list of roles: it does not say what any of them does, what world they belong to, or how they relate to each other.

That gap is why the four character pages on this site are split the way they are. The Hauling party belongs to the North, the Trader to the East, and the Explorer and the Castaway to the West and South respectively. The Queen is the one who does not stay home.

If you are deciding where to start, the four worlds are all open from the beginning of the Overworld, and there is no single correct order. The beginner tips page covers how to pick a first route, and the Overworld map guide explains how the routes branch. Later they collide, which the Gold Rooms explainer covers.

How the game individualises her

The most concrete thing published about the Queen so far is not a mechanic. It is a sound.

The art and audio post describes a per-character signature sound: a short audio cue that plays when you switch to a character and occasionally as they move. The Queen’s is the clink of her armour. Each playable character has one, partly as a way for the game to tell you who you are currently controlling without a UI label, and partly to give the cast physical presence in a grid-based world.

The same post notes that the characters even wear different types of shoes, and that character foley doubles as feedback for stepping on the grid. It also explains that repeated sounds get quieter and simpler over time so they do not grate during a long puzzle, and return to full texture once you have been still and then start moving again. Music and ambience never loop at all; they are generated from a set of in-game parameters including how long you have been in a puzzle and how active you are.

[!tip] Listen for the cue, do not read a hint into it A signature sound identifies which character is selected. It is not documented to carry any gameplay information, and nothing in the official material says a sound cue ever signals a hidden mechanic.

That design detail is a good illustration of how this game treats its cast. A character is not just a silhouette with an ability attached; they get a consistent physical signature across visuals, movement and audio. The Queen’s armour is part of that identity, and it is one of the few things about her we can state as fact rather than inference.

Where her abilities are not documented

As of September 24, 2026, no official source checked for this page describes a single puzzle ability for the Queen. Her entry in the store’s hero list is a name. The narrative post discusses her story. The audio post discusses her armour. The design post of September 1 discusses the game’s construction and its designers, not her.

That leaves three honest possibilities, and the sources do not distinguish between them:

  • She has a dedicated ability that has simply not been shown yet.
  • She uses the world mechanics of whichever world she is in, with no kit of her own.
  • She is playable in a narrower sense, and the “guiding” language refers more to story progression than to puzzle control.

No source says whether the Queen must be used to finish a world or whether she is optional, and no official material describes how character selection works outside the demo’s documented worlds.

We are not going to pick one. Not confirmed as of September 24, 2026, and this page is re-checked at launch on October 8.

What to expect after launch

The launch version ships with more than 1,000 interconnected puzzles, so the amount of undocumented Queen material is large by definition. Expect her identity reveal, her ability set and her voice actor to become public once players reach the relevant worlds. The structure of this page will not change, but the “not documented” rows almost certainly will.
