Quick Answer
The Explorer and the Castaway are the protagonists of the game’s western and southern worlds. The Explorer goes down alone into vast subterranean cavern networks and uses giant gems to channel coloured light beams, which phase him through solid walls, smash boulders and send him long distances. The Castaway is marooned and crosses open water with skipping stones, rideable lily pads and river redirection. The Steam store additionally names a talking boat among the heroes, alongside the Queen, a thief, a warrior and a wizard.
All three are documented as characters rather than as mechanics with a name attached, and the talking boat is the least documented of the three by a wide margin.
The Explorer: the West world’s solitary lead
The Explorer is the protagonist of The Promise, the western world. The official material describes him as descending alone into vast, subterranean cavern networks. That word, alone, is doing character work: unlike the North world’s six-strong party, this is a single character going deeper into a place with no other people in it.
His tool is light. Giant gems channel coloured beams, and those beams unlock dynamic abilities. Three effects are named officially:
| Documented beam effect | Status |
|---|---|
| Phasing through solid walls | Confirmed |
| Smashing boulders | Confirmed |
| Long-distance teleports | Confirmed |
| Which colour produces which effect | Reported only, see below |
| How many beams can be active at once | Not documented |
| Whether beams can be redirected once lit | Not documented |
The developers stress two things about how the world works. First, pay attention to how the colour of a beam opens opportunities in distant parts of the environment, which means the effect of lighting a gem is often felt somewhere you are not standing. Second, some passages only open when the correct combination of beams is lit at the same time, so order and simultaneity both matter.

[!warning] The colour-to-ability table is not official One preview article from June 10, 2026 reports that green phases through walls and blue pushes boulders, with a third colour truncated in the original text. That is a single second-hand source, it is incomplete, and Thekla has not confirmed any of it. Do not plan a route around green and blue until you have seen it in game.
The Explorer is also one half of the only mechanic pairing with a character that the developers have actually named. When the worlds collide, his light beams combine with the Trader’s magic mirrors, which the Gold Rooms explainer covers. If you want to see how two worlds’ rules can be stacked on each other, that pairing is the documented example.
The Castaway: the South world’s stranded lead
The Castaway is the protagonist of the southern world, Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes. He is marooned, and the world’s problem is water. The official material describes open waters between one island and the next, and the mechanic is built from three parts: route planning, river redirection, and stone-skipping logic.
The documented verbs are specific and worth separating from invention:
| Documented Castaway element | Status |
|---|---|
| Skipping stones used to create paths | Confirmed |
| Lily pads that can be ridden | Confirmed |
| River redirection as a mechanic | Confirmed |
| Route planning across open water | Confirmed |
| Marking where a stone will land | Confirmed as the intended skill |
| Steering a lily pad in rerouted water | Confirmed as the intended skill |
| Any ability beyond these | Not documented |
The developers describe the intended reasoning rather than a solution: analyse the huge skipping stones and the rideable lily pads to work out where you can actually get to, mark the landing points of the stones carefully, and decide which direction to send a lily pad once the water has been rerouted. That is a planning loop, not a reflex challenge, and it is the same patient reading skill the other three worlds ask for in different clothes.
A naming note, because it trips people up in search. Official sources use two labels for this character. The narrative material calls him a sailor, and the audio post calls him the Castaway. Both refer to the same stranded protagonist, and no source gives him a personal name. This site uses Castaway in headings because that is the term the sound documentation uses.
Explorer and Castaway side by side
| Explorer | Castaway | |
|---|---|---|
| World | The Promise, in the West | Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes, in the South |
| Starting situation | Descending alone into cavern networks | Marooned on open water |
| Core tool | Giant gems channelling coloured light beams | Skipping stones, rideable lily pads, redirected rivers |
| Documented effects | Phase through walls, smash boulders, long-distance teleport | Create stone paths, ride lily pads, reroute water |
| Documented skill emphasis | Light the right combination; watch what a colour opens at a distance | Plan a route; mark stone landings; aim lily pads |
| Named collision partner | The Trader’s mirrors | The moving crew from the North |
| Personal backstory | Not documented | Not documented |
Both entries share the same design signature: one tool, several effects, and an emphasis on thinking about where the effect lands rather than what the button does.
The talking boat
The Steam store description names the talking boat among the heroes, in the same list as the Queen, a thief, a warrior and a wizard. The narrative post separately lists a talking ship among the characters of the realms when it describes the first narrative layer.
That is the whole confirmed record. Everything else about it is open:
- Its name: not documented
- Which world it belongs to: not documented
- Whether it is playable, or a character you talk to: not documented
- What it does in a puzzle: not documented
- Who voices it: not announced
[!note] A named hero is not necessarily a playable hero The store description is a list of characters, not a control scheme. It does not state that every name in it is playable, and no official source says the boat can be driven. The honest answer as of September 24, 2026 is that the boat exists in the cast and its role is unknown.
The boat is a useful reminder of how the store page should be read. It is marketing copy that introduces a cast, and it does not carry the kind of detail that lets you plan a playthrough. Nothing connects the talking boat to the Castaway’s situation either, and no source says the boat he was marooned from is the one that talks. Treating them as the same vessel is a guess.
Why the cast feels individual: the documented sound design
The clearest published evidence that every character in this game is treated as a distinct individual is the audio post of September 9, 2026. Each playable character has a signature sound that plays when you switch to them and occasionally as they move.
| Character | Documented signature sound |
|---|---|
| Queen | Armour clinks |
| Warrior | Leather cuirass creaks |
| Thief | The small beads on the bag rattle |
| Castaway | A metal amulet around the neck |
The post also notes that the characters wear different types of shoes, and that character foley serves double duty: it gives the character physical presence, and it acts as feedback for moving on the grid. Footsteps and movement sounds get quieter and simpler when repeated during a long puzzle, then return to full texture once you have been still for a while and start moving again.
The audio direction behind this is unusual. Music and ambience never loop; they are generated from a set of in-game parameters including how long you have been in a puzzle, how active you are, and whether you are rapidly moving pieces and switching characters or thinking in silence. When you stop acting, the music intensity tapers towards silence, which avoids the fatigue of a loop reminding you how long you have been stuck.
[!tip] Sound as a status indicator If you lose track of which character is selected in a busy room, the signature cue is the fastest confirmation. It is documented as an identity cue, not as a puzzle hint.
The voice cast is still under wraps
The “Explore the Realm” trailer on September 23, 2026 announced the voice cast as an all-star ensemble. No individual performer names had been revealed as of September 24, 2026; the Steam news post and store page were both checked. Full voice acting is confirmed for English and Simplified Chinese.
This page is re-checked once names are published. Until then, any specific name attached to the Queen, the Explorer, the Castaway or the boat is unverified, and this site will not list one.
Where these two characters meet the others
Each of these leads starts isolated in their own world, and the structure changes when the Gold Rooms bridge two realms and open six large dual-combination areas. Two pairings are officially named, and both involve the characters on this page: the Explorer’s light beams combine with the Trader’s mirrors, and the Castaway’s skipping stones combine with the North world’s moving crew. The remaining pairings have not been published, and the Gold Rooms page keeps to the confirmed two.
If you are choosing a starting world, the beginner tips page covers how to pick a route, and the individual worlds have their own pages: The Promise for the West and Skipping Stones to Lonely Homes for the South.
